A method to address the non-random spatial distribution of on-board observer data to map landings and discards ArchiMer
Pointin, Fabien; Cornou, Anne-sophie; Prod'Homme, Romain; Taupin, Nicolas; Rochet, Marie-joelle.
he Landing Obligation is legislation meant to gradually reduce discards in European fisheries from 2015. Identifying spatial patterns of landings and discards is an important element in mitigating the effects of this legislation on fishing activity. On-board observer data have already been used to address this issue based on models involving statistical assumptions in relation to the non-random spatial distribution of data, which may cause errors in the parameters of interest. An alternative non-model-based mapping method using nested grids is applied to explore the spatial distribution of landings and discards for two French fishing métiers in the Celtic Sea and western English Channel from 2011 to 2016. The grid fineness and the estimate precision are...

INTRODUCTION: The Dover Strait (Figure 1) connects the North Sea to the English Channel. Here, northern France and South-East England are at their closest. This narrow corridor, one of the world's busiest straits for maritime shipping, is a key economic area for numerous activities, such as leisure and tourism, international ports and shipping, plus the exploitation of living or abiotic marine resources. This area is a significant resource for fisheries because many commercial fish species are abundant there, but also because of the presence of nursery and spawning areas and migratory routes linked to specific environmental characteristics. The vulnerability of these resources, which are subjected to strong anthropogenic pressures, has brought together...

Etude préalable à la gestion des stocks de crustacés en Bretagne ArchiMer
Autissier, Isabelle; Coum, Andrée; Cuillandre, Jean Pierre; Veron, Gerard; Latrouite, Daniel.
At the end of the seventies, as fishing abundance (based on Catch Per Unit Effort) in crabs and lobster fishery steadily declined, operating expenses increased, and fishing boats changed strategy (changing metiers, covering larger distance to fishing areas, fishing seasons being extended, ...) professionals and scientists aimed to consider reinforcing management measures. To enlighten and support potential related decisions, the Comité Régional des Pêches et Cultures Marines de Bretagne (Regional Committee for fishing and farming in Brittany), together with the ISTPM (Ifremer since 1984), conducted a survey on the exploited populations and gave a review of the involved Breton fleet. This report shows the results of a survey conducted among fishermen,...

Interaction between marine populations and fishing activities: temporal patterns of landings of La Rochelle trawlers in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Poulard, Jean-charles; Leaute, Jean-pierre.
Marine populations are distributed heterogeneously in space and time because of the diversity of habitats and the requirements of species life cycles. Human exploitation of these resources also varies as a function of space, time and the type of fishing activities performed. These three factors determine fishing strategy at different levels of integration. The purpose of this study was to describe and analyse, with respect to different time scales, the relations between the modalities of resource exploitation and the biological or demographic characteristics of the species involved. These investigations relate to the more general task of acquiring the basic knowledge needed for spatialised management of fishing effort. A fleet of trawlers from La Rochelle,...

Les flottilles de pêche des pertuis charentais vues du ciel – Synthèse des campagnes 2004-2005-2006 ArchiMer
Leaute, Jean-pierre.
To identify and estimate the evolution of use of fishing areas operated by professionals fishing vessels in Pertuis charentais, from 2004 to 2006, 3 surveys (40 aerial census) were carried out between May and October. The connection with the species landed by these vessels, and the link with bottom of the sea operated by them was studied. Landings of sole (Solea solea) and cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) were specifically studied.

Les stocks de poissons démersaux sous quota
en Manche Est et mer du Nord ArchiMer
Mellon, Capucine.
Cod (Gadus morhua, L.), whiting (Merlangius merlangus, L.), saithe (Pollachius virens, L.), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus, L.), sole (Solea vulgaris, L.) and plaice (Pleuronectes platessa, L.) make up the main demersal stocks under quota which concern the French fishery in North Sea and Eastern English Channel. The diagnosis on the state of stocks are set up at the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). Recommendations which result from the analyses are proposed to the European Union. Most of the stocks are close or outside their safe biological limits. Several reasons account for that such as the high fishing mortality rates and mixed fisheries on species with diverse biological characteristics. Consequently, more and more young...

Trends and drivers of marine fish landings in Portugal since its entrance in the European Union ArchiMer
Bueno-pardo, Juan; Pierce, Graham J; Cabecinha, Edna; Grilo, Catarina; Assis, Jorge; Valavanis, Vasilis; Pita, Cristina; Dubert, Jesus-pedreira; Leitão, Francisco; Queiroga, Henrique.
Marine landings in Portugal have decreased at a higher rate than fishing effort in the last 20 years. Identifying the variables driving the quantity and composition of landings is pivotal to understand the dynamics of the fisheries sector, which entails complex social and environmental aspects. In this study, we investigate the main drivers of marine fish landings in continental Portugal between 1989 and 2014. To identify common trends in time series, and quantify the importance of environmental factors, we applied a dynamic factor analysis considering four regions and three types of gear (trawling, purse-seine, and a multi-gear fishery). Our results show the importance of fishing effort as the most relevant factor driving marine landings in Portugal, both...
